About Us

NCKRF is one of just a handful of regional renal charities dedicated to pioneering innovative world-class research, enabling scientists and clinicians to develop and improve patient outcomes.

Northern Counties Kidney Research (NCKRF) was established in 1970 as a regional branch of the National Kidney Federation (now Kidney Research UK). We became an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission in 1988. We operate in the North of England  (Northumberland, Cumbria, County Durham, Tyne & Wear, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire).

World-Class Research

NCKRF is one of just a handful of regional renal charities dedicated to pioneering innovative world-class research, enabling scientists and clinicians to develop and improve patient outcomes.

Through the grants, the fund also support researchers such as PhD students. This not only promotes a speciality in nephrology and renal research but aims to retain those with skills within the region. However, none of this could take place without our volunteers and fundraisers.

The Fund is run by four Trustees supported by a Main Committee and a Scientific Committee. Details can be found on the Governance page.

  • Our funding from NCKRF was vital to provide continuity for our research between two nationally awarded grants. It enabled key team members to continue working on the project and deliver important results.

  • "NCKRF provides key start-up money that enables new projects to get off the ground."
